R-22 Refrigerant Phaseout: What You Need to Know

You might have heard that the R-22 refrigerant is being phased out. What does this mean for your HVAC system and you? Pro Temp LLC, your trusted HVAC partner, is here to guide you through this change. Read on to discover what you need to know about this transition and how we can support you.

What is R-22 Refrigerant?

R-22 refrigerant, also known as HCFC-22, is a hydrochlorofluorocarbon, a colorless gas commonly used in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. It has been in production since the late 20th century and has been widely used by HVAC professionals for its exceptional cooling efficiency. The refrigerant's job is to absorb heat and transfer it to the HVAC evaporator coil, where the heat energy is released. Once the air has been cooled, your indoor temperature is lowered as it is returned to your home without the excess heat it had before.

Why is R-22 Being Phased Out?

Unfortunately, this particular refrigerant has been identified as having a severe ozone-depleting potential. Due to its harmful effects on the environment, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has implemented a plan to eliminate the production and importation of R-22. Starting January 1, 2025, all new residential   air conditioners, heat pumps, and furnaces must use A2L, R-410A, or R-32 refrigerants.

These new refrigerants, carefully selected for their safety and environmental benefits, will replace the R-22 refrigerant currently in use, ensuring a secure and sustainable future for HVAC systems and our planet. A complete ban on R-22 is expected by 2030. Your old HVAC system can still be serviced until the R-22 supplies run out, although the costs will become significantly higher as reserves of the refrigerant become more scarce.

How We Can Help

Existing systems using R-22 refrigerant will eventually need to be replaced or retrofitted to use alternative refrigerants. These alternative refrigerants are readily available in the market, and our team at Pro Temp LLC can guide you through the transition process. As supplies of R-22 refrigerant become scarce, it's essential to be prepared for a significant increase in the cost of this refrigerant. Moreover, using R-22 refrigerant after the phaseout date could lead to potential system breakdowns and costly repairs, making it even more crucial to act now.

Why wait until the cost skyrockets, though? Our team of experts is here to help you prepare ahead, saving you a significant amount of money, time, and unnecessary stress.
